PERFECT TEAM AT THE OLD COASTGUARD HOTEL .

Within a few months of arriving at The Old Coastguard Hotel in Mousehole, Barney Mason, the 30 year old Head Chef, has won a second Red Rosette from The AA and immediately declared his ambition to achieve three of the beauties. “This will take the restaurant to a different level but with the strong team that we are building in the kitchen – already recognised today - I want to set my sights high. I’ve brought Jonathan Blair who is a superb Pastry Chef, with me, and I know that there is a plentiful supply of superb local and seasonal ingredients. The difference between two and three stars is consistency and I am confident we can achieve that.”

He has honed his skills in the West Country, latterly as Head Chef of Mill End Hotel in Chagford. “Mill End is rated as one of AA’s top 200 hotels with a restaurant to match. Head Chef Barney Mason has won great critical acclaim this year from the national press,” said Devon Life’s Restaurant Guide last year.

The journey from talented young footballer to Master Chef of Great Britain has already been trodden by another famous chef. Barney trialled for Plymouth Argyll and Watford but his hero is Marco-Pierre White and he took the path from Torquay College to the Grand Hotel where Colin Liddy gave him time and patience and taught him the details of good cooking.

He arrived at the Old Coastguard with his knives and his whites just to help out for a bit, but having worked with owner Bill Treloar for a couple of weeks, he jumped at the chance to head up the kitchen when Bill made the offer.

He started at Mill End under Wayne Pearson in February 2003, knowing he would take over when Wayne left a year later. He was elected a Master Chef of Great Britain once Pearson saw he had reached the high standards required.

Barney’s signature dish – Lobster Ravioli with a spiced guacamole in a tomato and tarragon consommé - is a delicious rainbow of scents and tastes. He acknowledges that the region has the highest quality fresh ingredients and he is looking forward to working with local suppliers to produce a menu which the Old Coastguard’s discerning customers will relish.

Chantek are delighted to announce the launch of the all new wine list...

Pairing Asian Fusion with wine from around the world is an exciting experience, one we have immensely enjoyed in selecting the wines for our new list. We aim to de-mystify pairing Asian Fusion food with wine by indicating which styles of food go with each wine and including a selection of recommended dishes for each wine. As an Asian Fusion dining experience often includes a number of dishes, and flavours, we have extended our list of wines by the glass, in both 175ml and 250ml servings, allowing our customers to sample a selection of the wine list. To celebrate the new wine list we invite you to enjoy a complementary glass of house wine next time you dine with us. ( Please print out this sheet, other offers do not apply, Sun to Wed only, offer ends March 31st) Chai Yo!

Top Award for Cornish Wine Grower

Camel Valley Vineyard has won Britain’s only Gold medal in the 2005 International Wine Challenge (IWC) for the 2001 Camel Valley ‘Cornwall’ Sparkling Brut.

Bob and Sam Lindo received their formal accolade at the International Awards Dinner at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London on Wednesday 7 September. The vineyard was also presented with a bronze award for their Bacchus and a ‘seal of approval’ for their Seyval.

Said Bob: ‘To represent Britain at the International Wine Oscars is a great honour. We were seated alongside other Gold Medal winners from the world’s top vineyards and it’s a dream come true’.

The UK Government for official functions in Brussels is currently using the 2003 vintage of Camel Valley ‘Cornwall’ during the UK’s EU Presidency.

Footnote: The vineyard having doubled in size over recent years is expecting a bumper crop. There are plans to double the vineyard size again this coming winter.
